LEADER
A leader/guide is a person who leads or guides participants without
the intent of imparting technical skills and knowledge beyond that which
is necessary to safely participate in the activity. Participant knowledge
and skills are valid only for the duration of the activity.
If you are already a qualified leader/guide with another organisation,
you can apply to PACI for recognition of prior learning (RPL). For information
on how to become a PACI member via the RPL process, please go to how
to join.
A leader is the first membership level in the PACI system. This classification
denotes an individual who:
- Is able to identify and apply skills and knowledge areas to a wide
variety of abseiling contexts; and
- Is able to apply solutions to a
defined range of unpredictable problems;
and
- Is able to take limited responsibility for the quantity and
quality of the output of work of others; and
- Has a demonstrated understanding
of a broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical abseiling
concepts; and
- Is able to assume a role of responsibility and accountability
for the health and safety of others in his/her charge; and
- Is able to act as an instructional assistant during the delivery
of formal training courses.
PACI leaders are authorised to:
Conduct activities (within the scope of their endorsements) that do
not lead to a formal qualification; and
Act as a guide (within the scope of their endorsements) where no formal
training is to take place.
Performance requirements:
To qualify for this rating, an applicant must:
Be at least 18 years of age; and
Submit proof of medical fitness. If a medical examination is required,
the form must be signed by a licensed physician and state that the
applicant is fit for climbing/abseiling. The physician signing the
form must not be the applicant; and
Have been assessed as competent against the following unit from the Training
Package for assessment and workplace training; Train small groups; and
Hold formal recognition of competence and experience in at least one
(1) technical skill (eg abseiling endorsement) for which they wish to
conduct/supervise; and
Have a current recognised qualification in senior first aid and CPR
Renewal:
1. Annual submission of a completed, signed PACI Membership Agreement;
and
2. Annual membership fees paid.
Upgrading: Leaders may upgrade to an instructor classification be completing
a 2 day PACI instructor assessment.: Leaders may upgrade to an instructor

NOTE: PACI members must be in active status before they can represent
themselves as being authorised to conduct/supervise training related
activities.
